A LESSON TO BUILD ON When Amazon let major U.S. department store chain Kohl’s handle product returns, it wasn’t a simple customer service move. It was a backend play with front-end benefits. Kohl’s had idle space and staff. Amazon had a growing returns headache. The partnership yielded shorter lines, happier customers, and a surprising lift in Kohl’s in-store traffic. This unlikely alliance turned logistical slack into shared value. Leadership Lesson: Look beyond the silos. They turn excess into opportunity by asking: Where do we have untapped capacity? and Who else could benefit from it while advancing our goals? Arm Them With a Custom Slide 2. Translate the Value Into Their Metrics 3. Offer the 3-Year ROI Narrative 4. Name the Risks Before They Do 5. Draft a Win Email They Can Forward 6. Show Them How to Say No to You 7. Give Them Internal Credit 8. Map the Decision Chain With Them 9. Offer a ‘No Budget Needed’ Pilot 10.
